SED2D - The SED2D model is a sediment transport model, sediment transport modeling, sediment transport modelling

SED2D DESCRIPTION

SED2D

SED2D is the name for the sediment transport numerical model developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station. It has the ability to compute sediment loadings and bed elevation changes when supplied with a hydrodynamic solution computed by RMA2.

To run SED2D, the following input files are needed:

  • ASCII input file which defines the existing bed conditions and incoming sediment loads. This boundary condition file is created using SMS.
  • Binary input geometry file created by GFGEN which defines the finite element mesh. The mesh itself is created using SMS.
  • Binary input solution file created by RMA2 which gives the flow at each node of the mesh. The flow is used to compute where the sediment travels, how much settles, and where it settles.

SED2D is used to compute sediment loadings and bed elevation changes when supplied with a hydrodynamic solution from RMA2. It was previously distributed under the name of STUDH. SED2D can be used to model sand bed types or clay bed types with up to ten clay layers. It is possible to model both steady-state and transient flow types, just as with RMA2. Inside SMS, the interface to SED2D is disabled until the GFGEN geometry and RMA2 boundary condition files have been read in.

SED2D outputs three files:

  • A binary solution file containing changes in the bed elevation.
  • A binary solution file containing a new bed structure. This is only used for clay beds.
  • An ASCII file defining the new geometry which takes into account bed elevation changes.

The solution files can be read into SMS and viewed just as those from RMA2. The new geometry file should be used to start over from GFGEN to create a new RMA2 solution, to run SED2D again. In this way, bed changes are reflected in the new RMA2 solution, and this iterative process allows the user to see what changes will occur over time.
